Ike Kills 10 in Haiti, Takes Aim at Keys

A "ferocious" Hurricane Ike bears down on Haiti and the Bahamas, killing at least 10 people as it takes aim at the Florida Keys and Cuba. Earlier, the Category 4 storm unleashed some of its strongest winds on the Turks and Caicos Islands, where people who didn't take refuge in shelters were "just holding on for life."

McCain Says Palin Will Meet Media Soon

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has yet to conduct an interview since her surprise nomination as Sen. John McCain's running mate 10 days ago, will begin giving interviews in a "few days," McCain says. But his campaign manager will not go so far, saying, "She'll agree to an interview when we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it."

US Takes Control of Fannie, Freddie

The Bush administration announces the U.S. government will take control of ailing mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The two companies hold or guarantee about $5 trillion in mortgage debt — about half of the nation's total.

The husband of Benazir Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari, wins the election for the Pakistani presidency.

The widower of the late opposition leader Benazir Bhutto is elected to lead Pakistan by a landslide. Asif Ali Zardari replaces Pervez Musharraf, who came to power nine years ago through a military coup. Zardari has little political experience and has faced corruption charges in the past.
